Migrate from Clio Grow to GavelGrow
Clio Grow (formerly Lexicata) is the intake CRM half of the Clio suite. For firms whose marketing needs have grown past basic intake — full attribution, call tracking, benchmarks, automated SMS — Clio Grow gets expensive and stops where the funnel really starts to matter. The good news: GavelGrow handles the marketing funnel and you keep Clio Manage running for case management. Two tools, clean handoff at the signed-case boundary.
What Clio Grow is not built to do
- Per-seat pricing math — Clio Grow is $49/user/month. A 5-person firm pays $245/mo just for intake. GavelGrow Track ($199/mo) includes 5 seats with the platform, attribution, call tracking, and automation.
- Marketing reporting Clio Grow lacks — Clio Grow tracks leads through your pipeline. It does not tell you which Google Ads campaign generated a signed retainer, what your CPL is by source, or how your conversion rate compares to other firms. GavelGrow does all three.
- Built-in call tracking — Clio Grow does not include call tracking — you bolt CallRail on top, which is its own subscription. GavelGrow has Twilio-powered call tracking native.
- Practice-specific intake templates — Pre-built sequences for divorce, custody, prenup, PI, criminal defense, etc. — each tuned to the right intake questions and follow-up cadence.
What moves, what stays, what is not here yet
Carries over (6)
- Lead history — CSV export from Clio Grow → import to GavelGrow with field mapping
- Contact records with all custom fields — direct import, no mapping step.
- Pipeline stages — Clio Grow lifecycles map to GavelGrow lead status
- Intake form submissions — Re-create the form in GavelGrow with the same fields, embed on the same URL
- Source / referral attribution where exposed in Clio Grow exports — direct import, no mapping step.
- Notes and lead history timeline — direct import, no mapping step.
What stays in Clio (and the handoff) (4)
- Clio Manage stays exactly as is — case lifecycle, deadlines, billing, documents
- Once a lead in GavelGrow becomes a signed case, push to Clio Manage as a new matter via CSV export
- Marketing attribution stays in GavelGrow so you can trace closed cases back to the originating Google Ads keyword
- Direct API integration with Clio Manage on the product roadmap
No equivalent in GavelGrow today (2)
- E-signature — Not native. E-signed engagement letters stay in Clio Grow, or move to a dedicated tool such as DocuSign, HelloSign, or Adobe Sign. Native e-signature is on the product roadmap.
- Direct Clio Manage sync — On the product roadmap. Today a signed case moves to Clio Manage as a new matter by CSV export.
Clio Grow stays live the whole time
Nothing is cancelled and nothing is cut over until the numbers agree. On Managed, a migration engineer runs every step below for you.
- Day 1-2 — Export + import — CSV export from Clio Grow (Settings → Data Export). Import to GavelGrow via guided onboarding. Field mapping reviewed for each custom field.
- Day 3-5 — Intake form re-creation — Re-build your existing intake forms in GavelGrow using practice-area templates as starting points. Embed on existing website URLs (no DNS changes).
- Day 6-10 — Sequence rebuild — Translate Clio Grow follow-up automations into GavelGrow SMS + email sequences. GavelGrow templates cover most common patterns out of the box.
- Day 11-14 — Verification + cutover — Run a 3-5 day parallel period with both tools live, verify lead capture matches, then point all forms / Google Ads to GavelGrow and cancel Clio Grow.
Switching from Clio Grow, specifically
Will my Clio Manage integration break?
No. Clio Manage stays on its own subscription. GavelGrow exports signed cases as CSV in Clio Manage's import format. Direct API integration with Clio Manage is on the product roadmap.
What about Clio Grow's e-signature feature?
For now, e-signed engagement letters can stay in Clio Grow during a transition period, or migrate to a dedicated e-signature tool (DocuSign, HelloSign, Adobe Sign). GavelGrow native e-signature is on the product roadmap.
What is the cost difference for a 5-person firm?
Clio Grow at 5 users = $245/mo. Plus CallRail typically ~$95/mo. Plus AgencyAnalytics ~$215/mo. Total ~$555/mo for three tools. GavelGrow Track = $199/mo for the unified platform, 5 seats, 2 tracking numbers, attribution.
Do my custom intake fields carry over?
Yes. GavelGrow custom fields map 1:1 with Clio Grow custom fields during CSV import. Practice-specific templates often include the most common fields already (incident date, opposing party, jurisdiction, etc.) so you can de-duplicate during migration.
